From the AI Global Council: Evolutions in the AI legal landscape

Artificial intelligence (AI) has continued to emerge as a transformative force in our rapidly evolving technological landscape. To participate in the advancement of AI technologies, policies, and ethics on a global scale, the AI Global Council—a group founded with the vision of fostering collaboration and reshaping the responsible development and deployment of AI—is addressing important questions regarding AI adoption.

At the council's second meeting this past January, one of the key discussion points was around what the AI legal landscape will look like in the near future.

We asked two experts in the field of AI to provide their thoughts on this topic. Watch the excerpts of their responses and read key takeaways below:

Evolutions in the AI legal landscape

Trisha Meyer, a professor of Digital Governance at the Brussels School of Governance, points out the recent surge in lawsuits surrounding the use of generative AI. These legal battles center around the question of what makes something creative? And at what point can we say that something has been changed sufficiently, that it becomes something unique in and of itself. She underscores the potential ramifications of these legal developments on the open access and free flow of information, prompting considerations about the necessity of imposing barriers around data. Dr. Meyer cautions that elevating such barriers, even only in certain scenarios, could lead to a domino effect that drastically restricts what generative AI can do for us.

Vincent Yates, Chief Data Scientist at Credera, believes the AI legal landscape will take time to really take shape, but once changes do start to happen, we can expect them to come quickly. Given that leaders in the technology space are still developing their understanding of what's possible with AI, it stands to reason that it will also take time for lawmakers to catch up and draft legislation that will shape the AI legal landscape of the future.

As the AI Global Council continues its mission of fostering collaboration and shaping the responsible development of AI technologies, the insights shared by our experts shed light on the multifaceted challenges and opportunities ahead in the AI legal landscape. Moving forward, it is evident that a concerted effort involving stakeholders from diverse sectors will be essential in crafting legal frameworks that not only protect rights but also promote the ethical and responsible use of AI for the benefit of society as a whole.
