Credera Participates in Program to Provide Books for Thousands of Low-Income Families

HOUSTON– Our friends at the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation (BBHLF) recently launched a new program that will give thousands of low-income children their very own home library.

Through the My Home Library program, children create a wish list of books. Donors use the tool to sponsor a child for $30, providing their household with six new books. In partnership with Phillips 66, Marathon Oil Corporation, the Wade Smith Foundation, and Credera, the BBHLF has the goal to provide more than 5,100 home libraries to economically disadvantaged children in the community.

The program kicked off at Browning Elementary on Tuesday, January 17. All 560 students will be the first to receive books. Donations for the My Home Library program are being collected and “wish lists” were revealed on January 30.

Credera is grateful for the OpenGive volunteers and employees involved in developing the My Home Library website. Their hard work is helping the BBHLF, our Houston community partner, accomplish their mission to “improve the quality of life for Houstonians of all ages through the power of literacy–the ability to read, write, speak clearly, and think critically.”

“It was gratifying to see the positive reactions of people benefiting from something you’ve worked on rather than just reading the bug reports, which can feel like a list of failures,” says Scott Stevenson, Credera Architect and OpenGive/My Home Library volunteer team leader. “Without a commitment of time, resources, and leadership by both Credera and the foundation, our hackathon project would have just been a weekend experiment.”

OpenGive is a hackathon focused on building world class software using open source technologies that aim to make a substantial difference in how non-profits execute their mission. The 2016 Houston OpenGive hackathon partnered with Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, Living Water International, and Pain is Power Inc.

Credera’s goal is to invest our time, talent and resources into people and programs, like the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, in ways we believe will have an immediate and meaningful impact.
